Anatomy of female reproductive system -1 Dr. Waleed Al-Katib
Female Reproductive System • Produces ova • Secretes sex hormones • Receives the male spermatazoa during • Protects and nourishes the fertilized egg until it is fully developed • Delivers fetus through birth canal • Provides nourishment to the baby through milk secreted by mammary glands in the breast
1.The external female genitals (Vulva ) •. The external female genitals are collectively referred to as The Vulva. •. The Vulva, comprised: – mons pubis • labia majora and labia minora • clitoris • opening of the urethra (meatus) • vaginal vestibule (vaginal opening) • vestibular bulbs • vestibular glands. The Vulval vestibule (Vulvar vestibule ) is a part of the vulva between the labia minora into which open – Urethral – vaginal opening
Mons Veneris (mons pubis) • The soft mound at the front of the vulva (fatty tissue covering the pubic bone). • It is sexually sensitive in some women and protects the pubic bone and vulva from the impact of sexual intercourse. • After puberty it is covered with pubic hair, usually in a triangular shape. Labia Majora • The outer "lips" of the vulva. • They are pads of loose connective and adipose tissue , as well as some smooth muscle. • The labia major wrap around the vulva from the mons pubis to the perineum, usually covered with pubic hair.
• It hides, partially or entirely, the other parts of the vulva. • There is also a longitudinal separation (pudendal cleft). • C ontain numerous sweat and oil glands. • It has been suggested that the scent from these oils are sexually arousing. Labia Minora • It lies medial to the labia majora • They are the inner lips of the vulva. • They are thin stretches of tissue within the labia majora that fold and protect the vagina, urethra, and clitoris. • There is no pubic hair on the labia minora, • but there are sebaceous glands. • The two smaller lips of the labia minora come together longitudinally to form the prepuce , a fold that covers part of the clitoris. Both the inner and outer labia are quite sensitive to touch and pressure.
Clitoris ((glans clitordis ) -Key • The clitoris, visible as the small white oval between the top of the labia minora and the clitoral hood (prepuce of clitoris) • It is a small body of spongy tissue and is the most sensitive part of the entire genital area • Only the tip or glans of the clitoris shows externally , • The clitoris consists of a midline shaft lying in the medial sagittal plane about 2-4 cm long and 1-2 cm wide which bifurcates internally into paired curved crura 5-9 cm long (attached to the under surface of the pubic symphysis The clitoris is capped externally with a glans about 20 -30mm long with a similar diameter
The glans is covered by a clitoral hood formed in part by the fusion of the upper part of the two labia minora .
