Main Stytem Functions: • First physical barrier to outside environment Protection- mechanical, chemical, bacterial, UV (melanin (pigment protein) protects nuculi), thermal, and dessication (drying out) Tempurature Control – sweat glands Sensory - receptors Excretion – sweat waste (urea) Vitamin D Synthesis Integumentary system characteristics: Composed of skin and its appendages Skin is the largest organ Over 2 square meters Approximitly 10 pounds 1.5 – 4.0 mm thick eperdimis is replaced about every 40 days The Skin (Integument): Consists of three major regions: 1. Empidermis- outermost region made of stratified squamous cells- most superficial region. Epi= top 2. Dermis – middle region 3. Hypodermis – deepest region The Epidermis : Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium cells (keratin= strong- dry-good line of defense), top layer of skin, lots of layers of squished squamous cells • Four distinct cell types (most common to least):
