ACCESS vs SPSS ACCESS is a database program for researchers and practitioners – good for record keeping by practitioners, user- friendly data entry, and customized reporting from the database. SPSS is a database program for researchers only – it is clearly a program made to perform statistical analysis not for record keeping by practitioners. The database is a table only format – no forms are involved.

Creating the SPSS Table Open SPSS Choose Type in Data This will open what is called the Data Editor Screen From this screen you can create your variables, enter your data, and run statistics Bottom left corner – Data View / Variable View We want to start in Variable View to create your table

SPSS Variable Name Rule Reminders Each variable name must be unique Each must begin with a letter not a number Variable names can not include blanks, or other characters like ?, !, “, #, etc. Variable names cannot include words used as commands in SPSS (all, ne, eq, to, le, ly, by, or, gt, and, not, ge, with) Cannot exceed 64 characters (Version 12) or 8 characters for earlier versions
