November 30, 2007 Italian Politics o Marchall plan – American government paid to help Italy and politicians that were pro- American o CLN – o 1976 referendum – turn country into a republic o Voting system was proportional o Christian democrats (DC) ~ 40% o Communists (PCI) ~ 27% o Socialists (PSI) ~ 13% o PRI + PPLI + PSD = 52% o “anni di promiso” = lead years o “red brigades” and the autonomia operaia o “new order” (ordine nuovo) o 1969 – 1983 o Bettino Craxi – head of the PSI o Lonord = federalist o Padania o Etruria o Terribua – derrogatroy term What happened after WWII Change from monarchy to republic (June 2 nd ) PCI = communist PLI = liberal Italy had 59 governments in 55 years!
