22/04/2008 11:30:00 Notes Hometown was birthplace of GM (Flint, Michigan) o Built Cadillacs, Chevrolets, etc. o Very grateful to company for the economic prosperity o Had parades, etc. to celebrate GM o “Everyday was a great day” o Father worked on GM assembly lines, spark plug Great Flint Sit-Down Strike o Took over Flint factories o Didn’t move for 44 days o National Guard called in, everybody watching o 1937 GM gave in, UAW was formed Wanted to get out of Flint o Got an opportunity as editor in San Francisco o Left his paper, the Michigan Voice o Felt disoriented in San Francisco o Got fired and sent back to Flint GM plant closed 11 older plants, including in Flint o Open 11 new plants in Mexico to save money on labor o Then buy newer, more high-tech factories
