Key Terms Handout No.1 Anthropology 104 The Concept of Culture The Two Key Uses of the Term in Cultural Anthropology Culture: Use no. 1  "The culture of a group consists of shared, socially learned knowledge and patterns of  behavior.”  •  This use of the term stresses the homogeneity of a group:  one society (group) one language  one culture  •  This definition is close to the popular use the term: the arts, knowledge, habits, and  customs of a people  (for example: Japanese culture, Balinese culture)  Problems with Use no. 1  Most communities are internally diverse, socially.  Not everyone “shares” culture the same  way.  The impact of globalization.  To speak of isolated or homogenous “cultures” doesn’t make  much sense.  “Culture”--in this sense--has become a political resource in a time of intense globalization  (e.g., multiculturalism, cultural rights)
