Sheet1 Page 1 THe Hunt for DNA- The Griffith Experiment -Frederick Griffith found that genetic material can pass between organisms -He used the bacteria Streptococus pneumoniae -There are two types: ->S Strain has a polysaccharide coat and is virulent ->R strain has no ps coat and is not virulent -When Griffith infected mice with dead S strain bacteria along with live R strain, he found many dead mice -THis suggested that some genetic material had passed fom the S to the R strain ->Called transformation Oswald Avery Experiment: -Set out to find out how Griffith's bacteria were transformed -Even when he removed 99% of the protein in a mixture of bacteria, transformation still occurred. -After analysis of the remaining material he found: ->Material had the same elements of DNA ->When separated, it migrated with DNA ->Removal lipids and proteins did not reduce transformation ->Proteases and RNases did not reduce transformation ->DNase destroyed all transformation -Pointed to DNA as the carrier of genetic information
