Sheet1 Page 1 -Lecture 1 (cont)- Positive control - Experimental group Negative control - Control group If hypothesis proves correct, that is also the conclusion Minimize the variables Science can only answer obective quetiosn, not subjective ones -Only questions which can be tested -Lecture 2a- Elements are fundamental forms of matter -Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass Elements cannot be broken apart by natural means -Once broken, they are simply subatomic elements There are 92 naturally occurring elements Need to memorize the first 20 Know number, name, and symbol (atomic mass?) All matter is made of elements: -Made of atoms (smallest form that retains properties) -Proton, Neutrons, Electrons P+ Neutral E- Atomic number is the number of protons in an atom Atomic mass is the sum of the masses of protons and neutrons in an atom -Electrons have a negative charge to balance the positive charge of the protons -Neutral atoms are atoms with an equal number of electrons and protons -Ions are atoms with an UNequal number of electrons and protons -Cations: (+) More protons than electrons -Anions: (-) Less protons than electrons Electrons travel in orbitals Can contain up to two electrons (or one) More orbitals = more energy Different types of energy levels: -K Level: Lowest
