Unformatted text preview: Sheet1 Page 1 Biological Psychology: Studies memory, (also cognitive psych) Brain function, (physiology) Physical structure of the brain (anatomy)-Studies how the physical structure and function of the body influence behavior and mental processes Cells of the nervous system: Two main types: Neuron- Specialized cells that respond rapidly to signals, and send signals of their own (communicators) Glial cells- Four main functions:-Hold neurons together-Guide growth of neurons-Secrete and absorb chemicals to maintain homeostasis (stable chem environment)-Send a limited number of signals between neurons All cells have: An outer membrane Nucleus - "brain" of the cell Mitochondria - Powerhouse of the cell (oxygen + glucose) Axon- Cell fiber that carries signals away from the cell body (most neurons only have one Axon) Dendrite- Receive signals from other neurons (most neurons have many dendrites) Action potential- The way information gets communicated: Either fired at full strength or at nothing...
