Describe a compound fracture. A compound fracture results by the skin being broken. Bone fragments may poke through the skin. Also, there is more damage to soft tissue, as well as blood vessels and nerves. Give several reasons why it is important in this case to have immobilized the femur well before transporting J.R. to the hospital. It’s important to splint a fracture before transporting a patient to the hospital in order to prevent complications (more tissue damage, blood loss, exposure to bacteria) Explain why there is an increased risk of osteomyelitis in this case. Osteomyelitis is bone infection that is normally caused by bacteria. The microorganisms can enter the bloodstream from anywhere in the body and spread to the bone. J.R. would have increased risk because most likely surgery (including pins, screws etc) would be required in order to fix the compound fracture. Also, because the skin was broken when the bone fractured, allowing bacteria to be introduced more easily.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
