Discuss the components and purpose of types of leaves-of-absence, including FMLA, military, personal, and sabbaticals. If the leave type is mandated by law, discuss the employer responsibilities andbenefits to the employee.Leaves-of-absence are granted through federal and state statutesto state, local, and federalemployees, including school employees (Leaves of absence, n.d.). Employers offer an array of leavesthat include: sick leave, emergency leave, personal leave, vacation, jury duty leave, militaryleave,Family and Medical Leave Act(FMLA) leave, and sabbatical leave (Leaves of absence, n.d.).According to the U.S. Department of Labor(n.d.), FMLA “provides certain employees with up to 12weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year” (para. 1). FMLA’s purpose is to help employees inbalancing their family and work responsibilities by providing them the option to take reasonable unpaidleave for certain medical or family reasons (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). Components andrequirements of FMLA are that employee must work for the employer at least 12 months, at least1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or moreemployees within 75 miles (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). Military leave is where an employee isentitled to time off and full pay for certain types of active or inactive duty for the National Guard orReserve for the Armed Forces (U.S. Office of Personnel Management, n.d.).The components of thistype of leave includes appointments that are not limited to a year andis prorated for part-time careeremployees and employees on an uncommon tour of duty (U.S. Office of Personnel Management, n.d.).The different types of military leave offer differing purposes. For instance, funeral honors dutyis anapproved absence from official duty, with pay, to perform at the funeral of a veteran(U.S. Office ofPersonnel Management, n.d.). Personal leave of absence is typically unpaid to where full time or parttime employees are granted leave for important or pressing needs. The purpose of this is to providerelief from excessive job stress to deal with personal obligations/situations. Sabbaticals are consideredbreaks from work where employees can pursue their interests such as traveling, research, volunteering, etc. An employee is still employed, they just are not required to perform their normal jobduties (Workable, n.d.). The purpose of sabbaticals is that employees get to take their minds offworking and the stress associated it to focus on what they love to do outside of work (Workable, n.d.).Certain types of leave are mandated by law; however, some types of leave of absence are used byemployers for incentive purposes. When the leave type is mandated by law, the employer must beresponsible to offer the benefit to the employee. For instance,FMLA requires employers allow employees totake the equivalent of 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year due either to a birth or adoption of a child, or to attend tothe serious health condition of an immediate family member or to the employee's own serious health condition (U.S.Department of Labor, n.d.). In essence, employers must be aware of laws in their state and complywith them.References
