You also hear feintbeeping from what seems like a heartbeat monitor for either the dog or a person off screen. What thisshows is an appeal to emotion, or Pathos. From the opening alone, you can infer something bad hashappened or is going to happen. From the sad music playing, to the heartbeat monitor that is beating ata steady and repeated rate, the rhetorical device that was used is called a Sonic Device. Sonic devices areused to appeal to emotions through sounds. You could also say that it could be described as Imagery, orsensory details used to evoke a feeling, call to mind an idea, or describe an object. In this case, a feelingof sadness or in relation to the idea of having an older dog.
