1. Throughout the story, were see the emergence of 4 key figures: a woman pregnant with
twins, two sons being, and a turtle. Though it is alleged that there were two worlds in
existence already, one with humankind, the creation of the Iroquois is based on the
woman descending into the dark world and essentially creating life. As the woman
descends into the darkness, in her distress, there is no place found for her. Here, a great
turtle becomes an island for which she and her offspring could reside, growing to
accommodate the life the twins would bring forward. The twins, Enigorio(the good
mind) and Enigonhahetgea(the bad mind) grow and emerge with differing views.
Enigorio took the head of the now decease parent to create the sun and her body to create
the moon, so that there might be light in the dark place. Against his brother’s wishes,
Enigorio continued to create, and for this reason, he and his brother battled.
