March 25, 2008 Communication 100 class notes David brooks 4pm on Thursday wait chapel Semiotics in the DaVinci Code The chalice the V the grail The old guy… sophie’s grandfather Organization is like a web of interconnected beings Like a spiders web Tightly coupled system All organizations are tightly coupled The larger the organization, the less tight those couplings are Ethnography Immersing yourself into a culture A lot of programs within the CIA and FBI that use ethnography Can be as simple as putting someone into an organization for a month or so where they do observational research… not interacting With true ethnography you have to interact Before you go into ethnography you have to have a position / context so that people don't feel threatened Nothing can survive in an organization if its not connected with something else EVERTHING NEEDS A CONTEXT Metaphors within an organization Personal (how things really work) stories about individuals and how they like to be seen in the organization by others… stories about yourself…
