April 8, 2008 Communication Class Notes Agenda Setting Macombs and Shaw -Media pushes topics on people and makes people believe the news they choose to present -Media has a huge influence on how people act, and consumer habits, and news that people consider to be important news -Media doesn't tell you not what to think but it tells you what to think about -Media framing has a really big power -People at wake are higher beings simply because of our innate path -MOST Americans don’t take the time to question their new sources and where it’s coming from -75 out of 200 people interviewed said that they got their news/ made decisions based on what they saw on Oprah -Media cannot tell you how to think -Can’t force you to believe something -Can’t force you to look at something from a certain perspective -Diversification of the media (ex: political campaigns) helps people get to thinking and questioning the media sources, and analyzing different sides of the stories they hear through the media -Can tell us what to think about
