Write briefly about the contributions of William Shakespeare to English literature. William Shakespeare was one of the greatest poets and authors in English literature. During Elizabethan era, he was the most successful playwright in England and part- owner of Globe Theatre. He was often viewed as England national poet and also known as the “Bard of Avon” because all his works had contributed greatly to English literature. Here are some of the contributions of William Shakespeare to the English literature. Introduction of new words, vocabularies and phrases One of the contributions of William Shakespeare was he had introduced 3000 new words to the English language. Before Shakespeare’s time, English language was not standardized. His works contributed to the standardization of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary that make English language become more expressive and colorful. He had invented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words never before used together, adding prefixes and suffixes, and devising words wholly original. Some of the words were addiction, cold- hearted, uncomfortable, cater, champion and so on. Some of his famous phrases that are still used until today are “The lady doth protest too much” in Hamlet, “It’s Greek to me” in Julius Caesar and “Is this a dagger which I see before me?” in Macbeth.
His influences on theatre It cannot be denied that William Shakespeare had a great influence on English theatre. He has not only created some famous plays in English literature such as Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello but he has also transformed English theater by expanding expectations about what could be accomplished through characterization, plot, action, language and genre. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, he mixed tragedy and comedy together in order to create a genre of romantic tragedy. His contributions on theatre had helped raise the popularity of theater. Besides, his plays were admired by those who are seeking pure entertainment. Development of blank verse Shakespeare’s blank verse was one of his greatest contributions to English literature. The dialogues in his plays were written in verse form and followed by a decasyllabic rule. He experimented with many of his plays and so many scholars believed he was still learning from his own mistakes. He kept experimenting with most of his works. The development of the blank verse showed he had achieved some form of maturity in his works. Blank verse is a literary device defined as un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter. William Shakespeare used the blank verse throughout his writing career and was able to experiment and perfect it.
