Write briefly about the contributions of William Shakespeare to English literature.William Shakespeare was one of the greatest poets and authors in English literature.During Elizabethan era, he was the most successful playwright in England and part-owner of Globe Theatre. He was often viewed as England national poet and also knownas the “Bard of Avon” because all his works had contributed greatly to English literature.Here are some of the contributions of William Shakespeare to the English literature.Introduction of new words, vocabularies and phrasesOne of the contributions of William Shakespeare was he had introduced 3000new words to the English language. Before Shakespeare’s time, English language wasnot standardized. His works contributed to the standardization of grammar, spelling, andvocabulary that make English language become more expressive and colorful. He hadinvented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changingverbs into adjectives, connecting words never before used together, adding prefixes andsuffixes, and devising words wholly original. Some of the words were addiction, cold-hearted, uncomfortable, cater, champion and so on.Some of his famous phrases that are still used until today are “The lady doth protesttoo much” in Hamlet, “It’s Greek to me” in Julius Caesar and “Is this a dagger which Isee before me?” in Macbeth.
His influences on theatreIt cannot be denied that William Shakespeare had a great influence on Englishtheatre. He has not only created some famous plays in English literature such asMacbeth, Hamlet and Othello but he has also transformed English theater by expandingexpectations about what could be accomplished through characterization, plot, action,language and genre. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, he mixed tragedy and comedytogether in order to create a genre of romantic tragedy. His contributions on theatre hadhelped raise the popularity of theater. Besides, his plays were admired by those who areseeking pure entertainment.Development of blank verseShakespeare’s blank verse was one of his greatest contributions to Englishliterature. The dialogues in his plays were written in verse form and followed by adecasyllabic rule. He experimented with many of his plays and so many scholarsbelieved he was still learning from his own mistakes. He kept experimenting with mostof his works. The development of the blank verse showed he had achieved some formof maturity in his works.Blank verse is a literary device defined as un-rhyming verse written in iambicpentameter. William Shakespeare used the blank verse throughout his writing careerand was able to experiment and perfect it.
