Why would humans, who are typically not diving animals, retain this reflex? data observations for vasodilation following occlusion were basedon the the outcomes of reactive hyperemia. After prolonged elevaton of the subject’s left arm, there was a noticible loss of color. It seemed as though all color was drained, and all that was left was a whitish-yellow color, very sick and pale looking. As soon as constriction of the vessels ceased, skin o the left arm was extremely speckeled with red, and within a few seconds the hand, especially the tip of the fingers, were a deep red, almost purple, color. This data seems to agree with the the initial hypothesis that blood flow, immediately after removing the cuff, would greatly increase into the previously occluded vessel. After artery occlusion there was vasodilation that was inversely proportional to the control microvascular diameter of the vessels. The dive reflex:
