Throughout The Stone Boythe readers believe Arnold has nofeelings, but the ending reveals that he was feelings, he just suppresses them; the people aroundhim don’t show love or compassion which disables him from showing his true feelings which ishidden in the text.In the beginning of the short story the audience can see that Arnold clearly admiresEugie. Arnold watches his older brother Eugie sleep, regards him admiringly when he takes offhis cap, steals wheat like Eugie did, and when he listens to him carefully about duck season.Arnold wants to be just like Eugie when he grows up but Eugie is too wrapped up in himself to1

Almost everything he did was a reminder that he was the eldest (Berriault 48)”, thisshows the audience Eugie’s arrogance and ego. Eugie’s ego was the start of his downfall. Whenthe two boys go hunting for ducks Arnold’s gun gets stuck on a fence and goes off killing Eugie.
