Nguyen 1 Hieu Nguyen English 2322 Dr. Montano 2 November 2016 The False Criseyde Literature has had a big contribution to the heritage of humanity. It journeys as a human’s friend when it tells us stories in every aspects of life, such as love, family, dignity, and even women’ s stories. The more the human life evolved, the larger the field that literature covers. Among the famous literary works focus on the most two common aspects of life, women and love, there is an old poem composed by English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, named Troilus and Criseyde. Many women say that Criseyde is innocent for her actions regarding Troilus while men are against Criseyde, saying she deserves the condemnation. Criseyde should be criticized and be at fault at her life, whatever she does. Troilus and Criseyde is not too different from any other love stories. Troilus is a prince of Troy, one of fifty sons of King Priam. He is handsome, respected, and a great warrior. On the other side, Criseyde is also a beautiful woman but she is below the highest level of women because she is a widow. However, being a widow also means she now has a full control of her old husband’s properties. Their love story began when they first met in the temple at the feast to honor the Athena. Even though Criseyde wore a black dress and stood to the corner, her beauty was still caught by many men, and Troilus was one of them, “that beheld her in black dress/ and yet she stood humbly and still alone” (1.26). Despite the fact that Troilus is a prince and a great warrior, he shows a totally different face in love, being weak and shy of asking Criseyde’s love.
