Jesse Thompson HIST 3763 February 23rd, 2007 A Life Mirroring History Heda Margolius Kovaly’s Under a Cruel Star: A life in Prague 1941-1968 is an incredibly vivid tale of a woman who survived Nazi concentration camps, married a communist, lost everything after he was denounced and still survived to tell the world about her journey. Kovaly’s life in Czechoslovakia mirrors the political upheaval that was occurring all around her at the time. At the end of World War I Czechoslovakia found itself at an advantage, unlike other eastern European countries. Czechoslovakia had many factory jobs for its citizens, and managed to maintain an economy that was enviable in the rest of Europe. 1 That all changed, especially after the Yalta conference at the end of World War II. The Yalta conference was viewed by many as the West’s abandonment of the East. Roosevelt and Churchill made little or no effort to save Eastern Europe from the grasp of communist Stalin. 2 Upon signing the agreement, communist regimes slowly began their take over of the east. After World War II Czechoslovakia was liberated, the Communist claimed. The soviets had taken most of Hungary, Yugoslavia and Poland, as well as half of Czechoslovakia. 3 There was a period of celebration, but soon Czechs came to the 1 Michael G.
