I/AbstractThis experiment's synthesis of cis-platinum is fascinating and necessitates special care andprecision. Cis-platinum is a chemotherapy drug that, among other things, is used to treat tumors ofthe bladder, cervix, lungs, skin, ovaries, and testicles. This project's goal was to learn how to createtwo coordination compounds that could be used as medications: cis-diammine-dichloroplatinum(II) [Pt(NH3)2]Cl2 and diamine-platinum chloride (II) [Pt(NH3)2]I2. This experimentdemonstrates how to make [Pt(NH3)2]I2 by heating a mixture of small amounts of K2[PtCl4], KI,and NH3 2M with temperature control at each stage and filtering to obtain brownish yellowcrystals. Making these compounds is theoretically challenging.II/IntroductionDue to the complexity of the substance, cisplatin has a wide variety of therapeutic effects andrelationships on cancer. Cisplatin works in biological cells by (1) being hydrated and consequentlyactivated by the substitution of a water molecule and (2) being crosslinked with base pairs. Directblocking of nucleic acids is done using DNA. This procedure results in the death of both cancerousand non-cancerous cells, which causes the tumor to lessen in size. The following two sections, which are encapsulated in the diagram below, will produce anti-cancermedications. Pay close attention to the quantities you measure because the reagents in thisexperiment are expensive. This small-scale synthesis was performed on a scale akin to that found inresearch facilities.
