Nuzzo 1 Kristi Nuzzo Professor Flood English 103 September 17, 2007 Comedy in the American Culture Comedy itself has been around for ages and has served many purposes among Americans. Some of the main purposes Americans use comedies are to make fun of and undermine the powerful, to address everyday concerns about social standings among Americans and to interact with others while enjoying time away from our everyday busy lives. A few of the most common ways Americans do so are by watching or listening to television shows, stand up comedies, movies, and songs. The humor that comes from different types of comedies often seems to only serve the purpose of being “just for fun”. Even though that may seem to be the only purpose, in the long run comedies end up leaving more of an impact on Americans than just entertainment. Throughout the article, Comedy , the author, Alain de Botton, explains that in the middle 1800’s, it was unlawful to poke fun at the powerful. Recently though, one of the basic reasons of comedy is actually indeed to make fun of those with a higher status. It has become so popular, all someone has to do is simply type into any internet search engine, “impersonations of (any famous person they want)”, and they could easily find a video of someone impersonating and poking jokes about that person.
