Biology class 3/7/08 Energy Transformations – Chapter 6 1) Metabolism – catabolic or anabolic 2) Metabolism is efficient 3) Metabolism is highly specific 4) ATP is the energy currency of living things 5) Other energy carriers 6) Cellular respiration a. Glycolysis b. Krebs cycle c. Electron transport systems Anabolic and catabolic reactions: Anabolic reactions – Input of energy to build (assemble) things Catabolic pathway – Output of energy from breaking things down 2) Metabolism is efficient * Cells must extract energy in a controlled manner C6H12O6 + 6O2 - 6CO2 + 6H2O occurs via many small steps Enzymes catalyze each step of reaction Energy captured is maximized Energy lost is minimized Enzymes lower reaction energy Metabolic pathways in cellular respiration – each has its own enzyme. The little steps makes it more efficient, less energy is lost. Each enzyme has it’s own job. They lower the amount of energy that has to be put into a reaction in order to make it take place. 3)
