Introduction to Communication (Human Communication (HC), Ch. 1; Lecture Notes) What are employers looking for? o Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, and Teamwork Skills Communication Defined o Communication is the process which meaning is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs and behaviors. Features of Communication o Process – An activity, exchange, or set of behaviors that occur over time o Meaning – The shared understanding of the message constructed in the minds of communicators o Symbols – Abstract, ambiguous, and arbitrary representations of other things Abstract – ex. Burn an American flag, idea is still there Ambiguous – ex. Not clearly defined Arbitrary – ex.
