Schedule for Deep Listening Arts 4964 Spring 2006 Wednesday 12-3:50pm WH 326 Jan. 18 - Introduction to the Syllabus and Deep Listening Practices Information for Assignment 1 Parts A, B and C. Assignment 1 Part A- read the Introduction pg xxi and Deep Listening Practice pg 1-4 . in Deep Listening: A Composer’s Sound Practice by Pauline Oliveros Read Listening in Dreams by Ione, pg 1-24 Read in Audio Culture – Introduction xiii - Pg 6 Part B - Download Audacity from http://www.audacity.sourceforge.net/ to your laptop and do the first tutorial in preparation for the Audacity workshop next week. Jan. 25 – DL Practices Bring your laptop and power adapter to class for an Audacity Workshop. Be prepared to record with your laptop. If you have an external mic for the laptop please bring it. Extension cords will be needed. Assignment 2 Part A - Answer one of the 35 questions. (Due WebCT 2/6) Part B – FOUND SOUND – Bring an acoustic found sound source to class next week. Take some time to consider your sound source. How loud is it? How far away can it be heard? Make sure it is very distinctive and sonically interesting. Be prepared to demonstrate all the ways of sounding your source. (Rubbing, tapping, shaking, scraping, blowing etc.) Bring your laptop and power adapter to class for recording sound sources and improvisations. Part C- Read in Audio Culture Section I Pg 7-64 Listen: Select three pieces from the discography Section I pg 419 Read Deep Listening: A Composer’s Sound Practice – pg 5-19 Feb 1 – DL Practices. Preparation for A Study in Mixed Environments . What is an environment? A soundscape? See Audio Culture , The Music of the Environment, R. Murray Schaefer pg. 29 and Deep Listening: A Composer’s Sound Practice , Field Recording pg 27-28. . Assignment 3 Part A –Record 10 minutes of your home environment (where you are living now). Pay attention to where you are placing your mic or computer. Listen carefully as you record. Choose the best 3 minutes of your recording and make an Mp3 file. Upload your file to WebCT Mp3 Group (Due WebCT 2/8) Part B - BALLOONS – Bring your laptop and some balloons to class next week .Our
