Poverty and Crime "Poverty is the mother of crime” Marcus Aurelius Antoninus [121-180 C.E.] It is still often implied that poverty and crime go hand in hand, or that one cannot deal with crime without dealing with the root causes of crime such as poverty. Poverty, as everyone understands it is rarely a choice but the most common burden of those who lack the advantages unlike the rest of us. It neither adds nor deducts anything from the duty of society to redress poverty that society also has the duty to safeguard its law-abiding civilians from crime, and to inhibit or control criminals. Acknowledging that poverty and crime are not generally related should not stop us from dealing with either poverty or crimes. Dr. Johnson said that poverty was a "great evil", he did not mean that it was the expression of evil people, instead the failure to deal justly with it. Crime can be the conduct of those who lack or have bad social connections, such as loners, lunatics, or gang members, it could be the impulsive expression of desire or greed .Crime can
