lTHEA 1206-03 Theatre Appreciation Spring 2008***MW 10:00-10:50am ***HS FAC Mabee Theatre or Jones Theatre Instructor: Whitney Smith, Graduate Assistant [email protected] FAC 208; 710-4866 Office Hours : After class or by appointment only Welcome to Theatre Appreciation! COURSE OVERVIEW How can theatre play a part in our lives? This class will challenge you to interpret, criticize, and appreciate the various roles theatre plays in society through positive comparison to TV and film. The purpose of this Theatre Appreciation class is to increase students' understanding, appreciation, and critical perceptions of the theatrical event. Readings, lectures and videos will focus on the elements of theatrical practice; artists and innovators of theatre throughout history; and on the theatre's development as an art form and a social phenomenon. REQUIREMENTS Reading & Discussions- Allow enough time to finish assignments thoroughly; offer thoughtful, respectful comments, listen carefully and take notes. You will be required to read chapters from our text as well as The Pavilion by Craig Wright. Production attendance- Attend two Baylor Theatre Productions ( Bye Bye Birdie and Picasso at the Lapin Agile ).YOU MUST ATTACH YOUR TICKET STUB AND PROGRAM together and turn in at the same time as the performance exam TO RECEIVE FULL POINTS!!!!!!!!!NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!! Quizzes and Tests- There will be a quiz for each chapter in the text that we cover. Your bottom two grades will be dropped. There will be three Exams, one for each section of the class. You may NOT make up QUIZZES . NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!! There will be a performance exam for each of the two plays you are required to attend and a reading exam for the play you are required to read. You may make up TESTS with the consent of the instructor, but with your score adjusted. Video Notes- Each time a video is shown, you will be required to hand in one page of notes on that video. Tests will cover
