ART 1440 Writing Assignment #1 TRAJAN The statue of Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus in Xanten, Germany not only portraits one of the greatest Emperors of the Roman Empire, but also demonstrates virtues of the ancient world. Ancient History is not only experienced through words, but is also being told by monuments that give us something tangible about certain characters. Ancient Tales can be heard and understood, but the remains of those days can be experienced and, given the right state of mind, relived. Monuments such as the Colosseum can be visited and a walk through that site tells more about roman culture than any text can capture. This is also true for Roman Emperors. Pictures of the statue of Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus can be analyzed, but seeing it in person is another experience. Subtle features such as his posture, his armor, the detail, and size of this statue give us an insight of what his character was.
