Lesson 12: Industrial Ecology – rmf34 Kalundborg, Denmark is the world's most recognized eco-industrial park. Interestingly, it did not develop by original design, but evolved over time as persons in the companies and community began to see the potential for symbiosis. It is an interesting question whether communities and companies can "design" eco-industrial parks (EIP) per se. As a challenge to your thinking in terms of EIPs, we ask you to choose an area, perhaps your hometown or Ithaca (possibly including Eco- Village in Ithaca), as a location to present the concepts of industrial ecology through a "design" of an EIP. Task 1 : Identify some existing businesses that have the potential for "industrial symbiosis," and other new or reinvented businesses that might be candidates for inclusion in an EIP. Briefly explain how each individual businesses you select would fit into an EIP and how the system as a whole would function. Some businesses that might benefit from being an EIP include: Cornell University A business that manufactures steel in community A Shopping Mall Local farms that are not located too distant to a suitable central location How the Aforementioned Businesses would fit into an EIP:
