Part 1 Community: I believe that the biggest problem facing individual communities is a lack of agency. People feel that individual contributions are too minute to cause change as a whole. Sure, some people drive hybrid cars, and Toyota has done a great job taking a concept (the Prius) that originally was scrapped as not even worth trying to be sold in the United States and finding a market. By the 3 rd quarter of 2007, the Toyota Prius made the top 10 list for vehicles sold in the United States. That is all well and good, but at the same time, I believe that many people buy the Prius to fit in because it’s a very “stand out” car. Sure, some people buy it to save gas and others buy it to benefit the environment, but I don’t believe that the good reasons are the ones that most people act upon. Region: On a regional level I see our biggest problem as being a lack of education. It is hard to be in a place like for me. Unlike most other Cornell students, I’ve made an effort to get to know both the surrounding communities and the people in them. I would place a bet that you could drive just about any Cornell student 30 minutes in any direction away from Ithaca and they would be both lost and surprised by the poverty and state of affairs in the surrounding regions.
