The Case of Genie: Critical Period for Language Development The documentary focused on Genie, a child who was isolated from society and was not able to communicate. Genie got her name from the concept of a genie, someone who lives in an isolated world and then is exposed to the reality, which means they must adapt to their new environment. Genie’s story caught many scientists and psychologists’ attention and each had a different way of approaching her case. Genie was taken in by some of the psychologists but it was only temporary because she eventually went into foster care. The scientists and psychologists studied whether Genie was able to develop language after passing the critical period for language, the theory developed by Chomsky. It turns out, Genie is able to form words but cannot form those words into a grammatically correct sentence. Genie was able to talk somewhat, but had a different dialect which was kind of hard to interpret since she was refrained from speaking during her childhood.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
