Justin Sidell October 23, 2007 Midterm Section 1 – Question 2: (a) What is social change? (b) What is social structure? (c) What is culture? Social change is the significant alteration of social structure or culture patterns over time within the nature, the social institutions, the social behavior or the social relations of a society, community of people or other social structures. If social change is viewed as a matter of the unfolding of social processes then it can be broken down into six different levels of process issues which are: Types of change, levels of change, time frames of change, causes of change, relationships of change to intention, and terms associated with change. Social Structure can be defined as a persistent network of social relationships, and can be conceptualized as the relatively enduring patterns of behavior and relationships within social societies. Culture is the accumulated habits, attitudes, and beliefs of a group of people that define for them their general behavior and way of life. Cultural change can result from
