STUDY GUIDE Resurrection in the New Testament The earliest written testimony about the resurrection of Jesus is found in 1 Corinthians 15. It was written before any of the Gospel accounts were written, although the Gospel stories go back earlier in the oral tradition. Read 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11 What is there in this passage that gives you the information that Paul is repeating something that he was told by someone else? The oldest form of the testimony is found in 3b-5: Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures He was buried He was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. ____________What is the Hebrew word that means the same thing as “Christ”? ____________Who is Cephas? In the four-line formula above, lines 2 and 4 provide the evidence for the claims made in lines 1 and 3: Q: How do you know he died? A: He was buried. Q: How do you know he was raised? A: He appeared.
