STUDY GUIDE Acts 1-28 Read: Introduction to the Acts of the Apostles NT 183-85 Look up “imbue” and “didactic” in any dictionary and write the definitions here: imbue: didactic Now express the introduction’s statement about the intent of Acts in your own words: __________Acts is a narrative sequel to which Gospel? What was the author’s concern relating to the church’s relationship to its Jewish heritage? What was the author’s concern relating to the Roman cultural and political environment? What is the function of the apostles, according to the author of Acts? Circle the letter beside the correct answer: Act’s portrayal of Paul: a. Thucydides, the Greek historian who lived about three centuries before Luke, advises historians to interrupt the account of events periodically to insert a speech that will help the audience to interpret the importance of the facts being narrated. When the precise content of a speech is not available Thucydides advises the historian to create an appropriate speech for the occasion. This is the meaning of the sentence on NT 184: “In line with the general practice of Hellenistic historians, Luke filled his narrative with speeches appropriate to significant occasions. These speeches, which amount to nearly one-third of the total text, are properly regarded as Luke’s literary creations, inserted into the narrative to instruct and please the reader.” This, of course, in no way affects the Christian view of inspiration. It merely means that the Holy Spirit inspired the author of Acts to compose the speeches that would properly interpret the sequence of events. In addition to being a good example of Hellenistic history writing, Acts is also “an important example of __________ _____________ _____________.” (NT 184) Acts falls into two major sections: 1-12 – The Jerusalem church (emphasis on Peter) 13-28 – The Gentile mission (emphasis on Paul) YOU SHOULD READ THE WHOLE BOOK OF ACTS to get the story, but you have to answer questions only on the passages listed below. 1
