Unformatted text preview: 1 THE GOOD NEWS ACCORDING TO PAUL A Summary of Pauline Theology PAUL’S ASSUMPTIONS Based on the Old Testament • There is only one God. • God created everything that is. • The purpose of human life is relationship with God. • Humankind (Adam) rejected God. • God then chose a covenant people (Israel) to witness to the one true God. • God was always faithful to the covenant relationship with Israel. • Israel was not able to be faithful to the covenant as outlined in the Torah. • The prophets promised a “new covenant” written on people’s hearts (Jer 31:31-35). • The prophets promised a Messiah who would rule a people obedient to God. PAUL’S ASSUMPTIONS Based on apocalyptic Judaism • The “present evil age” will give way to the Reign of God (Age to Come). • When the Messiah comes, people will be judged on the basis of their faithfulness. • When the Messiah comes, the righteous dead will be resurrected to share in the Age to Come. THE BAD NEWS The Human Predicament • Like Adam, all people reject God....
