The goal of planning the physical environment of a classroom is to maximize opportunities forteaching and learning (Tomlinson and Imbeau, 2010). The physical environment is an importantaspect of classroom management. The way a classroom is set up has a huge influence on theeffectiveness of teaching and learning because students vary and many parameters could make anindividual perform better or worse. Sommer (1967) studied seating arrangements in classroomsand concluded that student participation is closely related to seating arrangements. He alsoadvanced that the degree of acquaintance, talkativeness, friendliness, talkativeness, andproductivity are equally directly related to seating arrangements. There are endless combinations and arrangements that can be adopted for a classroom. Thisusually depends on the grade of the students, the space available, and the method of teaching.Three of the most widely used are the traditional rows, the u-shaped, and the group seatingarrangements. Each of them has its strong points and shortcomings and should be chosen to bringout the best from both the teacher and their students.
