Makayla BoltonNovember 11, 2022Cultivating EnsamblesI attended multiple different sessions of Cultivating Ensambles and there were acouple speakers who really stuck out to me. I was volunteering as a help desk personso I could not attend some of the sessions due to helping people navigate the space,but the ones I did attend were very interesting and gave me a lot of insight. The twopresentations that stuck out to me the most were that by Bryan M. Dewsbury and agroup of graduate students; Amber Wendler, Korrin Jones, Mika Pagani, Kregg Quarles,Daniel Smith, Anza Mitchell, Emily Griffith, Patty Raun, and Carrie Kroehler.Bryan M. Dewsbury gave a presentation titled “Hold on–Stories of Triumph andResilience in STEM.” He opened up his seminar by giving us an image of a bench andtelling us to imagine a little African boy sitting on the bench. He then told us the littleAfrican boy got moved against his will. He was moved to a tropical island, now calledBarbados. This little African boy was raised and eventually had a family, his son beingthe speaker himself. The now man was forced to prepare his children for a world he
