He was bornon August 22nd, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He did not categorize himself as a science fictionauthor because he claimed his work was based on the fantastical and unreal. His zest for writingbegan after he met a carnival magician who told him to “Live Forever”. After he graduated fromhigh school he spent his life in libraries 3 days a week due to the fact that he could not afford togo to college. In order to support himself, he sold newspapers and then got his first short storypublished in a fan magazine in 1938, which is also the year he graduated high school. Since thatpublication he published four issues of his own fan magazines, called Futuria Fantasia and thenbegan writing his own books. He was a recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medalfor Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation.
