He was bornon August 22nd, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He did not categorize himself as a science fiction author because he claimed his work was based on the fantastical and unreal. His zest for writing began after he met a carnival magician who told him to “Live Forever”. After he graduated from high school he spent his life in libraries 3 days a week due to the fact that he could not afford to go to college. In order to support himself, he sold newspapers and then got his first short story published in a fan magazine in 1938, which is also the year he graduated high school. Since that publication he published four issues of his own fan magazines, called Futuria Fantasia and then began writing his own books. He was a recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation. He died June 5, 2012 at the age of 91. Ray Bradbury inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create through his books like The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Dandelion Wine.
