Learning outcomes This course will introduce the capabilities of various microcomputer hardware components, describe and specify equipment needs, and describe and apply formal problem-solving techniques. The physical installation and maintenance of components such as CPUs, memory, expansion devices, communications equipment (LAN, modem, printers), secondary storage, and video displays will be covered. Important computer concepts such as CPU architectures, microprocessor technologies, character encoding, and number representations will also be discussed.

Computer and You ?
Why do we do it? Do you drive a car? Have you ever skidded like this? What should you do? Steer ‘into’ the skid? Steer ‘out’ of the skid? Let’s vote!
It’s not simple! It depends! We need to know :- Front or rear wheel drive? Front, mid or rear engined? Where is the Centre of Gravity? Knowing about the hardware and operation is vital to the outcome! Just the same with computer systems!
Soft landing on the Moon Can the processor perform enough calculation per second to compute the answer in real-time? Internet TV Can the system move enough data per second to fill the TV frames? Aircraft blind landing systems Can it compute with enough accuracy for a smooth landing rather than a ‘bump - down’?
Graphic Images What image representations do we need for different purposes such as photography or 3D modelling? Voice Over Internet What are the data transport systems we need to get sufficiently understandable speech or hi-fi music? Computer Programming Does the design of the processor make it easier or harder for particular programming languages to be used?
This is NOT about becoming a nerd! It’s all about practical & useful knowledge backed by theory.
