Survey of Art II Art 106: Survey of Art II; Section 003 Western Art: Renaissance through Postmodernism Spring 2008 West Virginia University                                        Instructor: Amy Bowman  Ming Hsieh Hall (Oglebay) Rm 122                                            Office:  Downtown Library 5 th  floor Lecture: MWF 1:00-1:50pm                                                                           (WVU Art Collection) E-mail abowman6@mix.wvu.edu                                          Office Hours : Wednesday 2-3pm Office Phon e: 294.4841 leave message                                                          or by appointment                                                                                    Course Description: The purpose of Art 106 is to introduce students to the methods and tools used in the creation and analysis of  art.  Content will be introduced through lectures and course readings, and will present a critical framework  essential to the study of art in the form of visual history.   This course is a survey of Western painting, sculpture, and architecture from the 16 th  century through present  day.  Lectures will proceed in a chronological fashion and examine all elements of art including process,  methods, historical and cultural context, patronage, individual artists and works, and theory at an introductory  level.  The objective is to understand the processes and tools used to create art, and how a particular work,  movement, artist, etc. is related in an historical and contemporary context. Objectives: Provide students with a foundation in visual literacy Introduce writing, research, analysis skills, and terminology necessary for the critical interpretation of art Engage students in the visual arts on both a community and global level This course satisfies GEC requirements #3 The Past and its Traditions, or requirement #5 Artistic Expression.  Art 106 is part of WVU’S Liberal Studies Program and will focus on the LSP goals of gaining critical  understanding of the fine arts and humanities, understanding the past and its traditions, and communicating  effectively.
