Matthew Zagelbaum World Cultures Section 6 Week 8 Reading Journal October 29, 2007 Yo Soy Joaquin Short Eyes  was the “major” reading due this week, however I felt more  inclined to write on the beginning of the Corky Gonzalez poem because it “spoke  to me more” and I felt stronger about it.  Short Eyes  was about life inside a prison,  where different jailmates who were mostly made up of minorities create some  sort of bond between them through “trash talking” while entertaining one another.  Short Eyes  refers to a prisoner in jail for child molestation. Perhaps it is the fact that they are both poems, but I find Corky Gonzalez’s  view very similar to that of Julia Burgos. It is clear to me that they are both  overwhelmed and want no part of American Culture (or lack thereof). While Corky, unlike Julia, was physically born in the United States he, like
