Chapter 12 Gases, liquids, and solids differ because intermolecular forces depend on the distances between the molecules -Any gas will expand to fill whatever volume is available to it. -Liquids and solids retain a constant volume -Liquid conforms to shape of container -Gases easily compressed, solids and liquid are nearly incompressible Most physical properties are controlled by intermolecular forces Solids-Molecules are tightly packed and highly ordered. Very strong attractions between molecules hold them in place locked in position Liquids-Molecules are tightly packed but with little order Gases- Widely spread molecules with much empty space in between, motion is random, very weak attraction between molecules The closer two molecules are together, the more strongly they attract each other. Intermolecular attractions involve electrical charges Intermolecular attractions between molecules are much weaker than chemical bonds that hold the molecules together E.g. HCl, held tightly together by covalent bond, strength of this bond that affect chemical properties Intermolecular Attractions: These forces arise from attractions between opposite charges and are classifies according
