Quotation Essay I chose to write about the quotation, “Happiness does not depend on outward things, but on the way we see them.” Leo Tolstoy penned this quote, and I chose it because it addresses a struggle that people encounter every day. Some people believe that external factors bring them happiness; they feel better about themselves and more important than others through the items they have or events they experience. Other people enjoy what they have and do not need anything else; they do not define themselves by what they have or experience—they are satisfied, happy even, with what they have in their lives, and they do not label themselves by their possessions or life events. I agree with this quote because I have met individuals who fall into both categories, and I believe that although items and experiences are fantastic, they do not cause long-term happiness. Long-term happiness comes from within. In the story "How Much Land Does a Man Need?,” Pahom always seeks more land. He is never happy with the land he has and will go to great lengths, like moving his entire family to a new estate, to acquire additional acres. However, someone else always has more land than he
