I. Introduction A. Hook : In the early 1900s, people with disabilities had no help or support, which left them helpless. Bridge : John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men during the Great Depression. Although slavery had ended, the human rights movement had not been fully established, which allowed for significant hatred toward black people and little understanding of people with mental handicaps. This novel helps to educate readers about the difficulties people like Lennie encountered because they had no documentation of their conditions to afford them legal assistance. Currently, there are services and resources for people like Lennie that help people with disabilities learn and live peacefully. B. Thesis : John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men explains the struggle of people who do not have human rights and experience mistreatment because they do not have the power to take action on their own behalf.
