Önder Çetin ASSIGNMENT 2 Design Spectra 1) Northwestern Turkey was strongly shaken by a major earthquake on August 17, 1999 (the Izmit earthquake, M w =7.4) The fault rupture was primarily right lateral strike-slip, and the primary fault rupture reached to the surface. a) Based on available empirical procedures (e.g. i. Seed and Idriss (1982), ii. Seed et al (1997), iii. Abrahamson and Silva (1996) iv. Turkish code) develop design acceleration response spectra for the given sites in the Marmara region that were strongly shaken by the 1999 Izmit earthquake. The distances from the zone of energy release for this earthquake are 72 km, 71 km and 75 km for Site 1, Site 2, and Site 3 respectively. b) Using these same procedures, develop design acceleration response spectra for the three sites for a design scenario earthquake of M w =6.5 on another segment of the North Anatolian fault. The fault is nearly vertical and primarily strike- slip. The Sites 1, 2, 3 are 6 km, 10 km, 12 km away from the zone of energy release, respectively.
