Course OutcomesAfter completing theDisaster Emergency Medical Personnel System –Volunteer Course, you will be able to:Describe DEMPS and how it is used to respond to an emergencyExplain the tasks volunteers perform in preparing for and deploying to anemergencyIt should take you approximately 90 minutes to complete this course andtake the final exam.
VA Emergency ResponseWhen a disaster or emergency occurs in the U.S. and a VA facility in one ofthe VISN’ s is directly or indirectly affected and or the National’ ResponseFrameworks is activation, VA is ready to respond. Your facility DEMPSCoordinator will search the DEMSP Management System(DMS) forvolunteers that are fully qualified and match the profession/specialty andwith skills sets required for the emergency response.5
What is DEMPS?DEMPS is a database systemof volunteer information used by DEMPSCoordinators to search for and find volunteers matching the personnelqualifications needed in response to an emergency. Given that each disasteris unique, pre-determined characteristics are used in the search of qualifiedvolunteers. Typical selection factors include but are not limited to:Staff availabilityPhysical statusEducation and trainingSatisfactory performance appraisalOnce qualified volunteers are identified, the Medical Facility Directorsretain the sole authority to approve volunteer deployment.6
