In the article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” Horace Miner illustrates the unusual rituals and beliefs of the Nacirema Tribe. The main idea is the human body is ugly and its natural tendency is to decay. Miner goes to great lengths to detail the daily rituals the Nacirema people go through to cleanse their bodies. When I first read this article my response to the image of this tribe was how strange theserituals are. How bizarre and barbaric this tribe’s culture is. For example the holy-mouth-men use their paraphernalia (needles, drills, awls, probes, and prods) to perform exorcism of the evils of the mouth, which consist of torture. The holy-mouth-men uses these tools to enlarge any holes, from decay, in the tooth and to stuff magical substance in the hole. The belief is a clean mouth draws more friends. Another example is with the medicine men and the temple where very sick patients go. The fact they are not allowed to enter unless they have rich gifts to give to the custodian,
