Description of Social Stratification 1.1 Describe social stratification (specific to the social stratification you have chosen: gender, race, age or social class). Cite your source! According to : “Social class is important because the U.S. uses a class system of stratification. A class system is a stratification system in which a person's social status is based on achievement” ( - factors-wealth-power-prestige.html ). Social stratification is when people are categorized based on rankings. There are different social classes including: lower class, middle class, and upper class. People are defined to these classes depending on their income and wealth achievements. In society, people are placed into categories based on their incomes. Depending on how rich or poor they are effects their social standing in society. 1.2 Who says there is social stratification? Find sources that discuss the area of social stratification you have chosen and its (non)existence and reasons for/against. Cite your source!

According to the book Sociology 2e , J.D. Foster says there is social stratification. He states there are certain percentages from the population belonging to the lower, middle, and upper classes. The book Sociology 2e also states: “Wealth is the most significant way of distinguishing classes, because wealth can be transferred to one’s children and perpetuate the class structure” (197). As families develop or grow, wealth is being transferred to their children. This is one of the many ways social classes exist and grow. 1.3 What evidence do you have that social stratification exists?
