Case Study 2 Question 1: What are the advantages and disadvantages of IHG’s virtual leadership development program for the company? For employees? Advantages to the IHG virtual leadership development program would be that the leaders of the company, which include the general managers and any employee holding corporate director or higher level position, can access the information in the leader’s lounge at any time. They don’t have to wait for training seminars or activities to be scheduled to increase their knowledge and skills of leadership. They are able to get articles, tips, videos, downloadable tools, and best practices from within their own company any time they need or want. They can access their strengths and weaknesses to provide themselves with better leadership skills. There are e-learning tabs that provide information about finance, customer service, and coaching. This option is also cheaper for the company than setting up training exercises or seminars. The lounge costs only 5 percent of what a typical three-day on-site leadership workshop would cost. More than 70 percent of the lounge members use it at least once a month, which averages to 6 times a year. The hotel general managers who use it show that their engagement scored have increased about 3 percent. Some of the disadvantages to the IHG virtual leadership development program are that it is only for the general managers and high-level employees. Any other employees then do not get any training and will have to figure out on their own how to get good enough with their leadership skills to get into a higher position and gain access to the lounge. They get no help training wise unless the higher level employees or managers offer them help and in most cases I doubt this happens because they are likely too busy. Also with this optional training people who don’t want to utilize it, which is 30 percent, don’t. They don’t get any training either and stay in their current ways which are likely not the 1
