You should read through this first and learn what you’re asked to do. Then open your
textbook and get started. I would recommend that you start this as soon as possible
because there’s way too much info for the “night before the exam”.
First, here are some muscles with their relevant information.
Muscles of the pectoral girdle and upper limbs
Muscles that position the pectoral girdle
1. Trapezius (back)
a. Origin: ligamentum nuchae and the spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae
b. Insertion: clavicle and scapula
c. Action: elevate, depress, retract, rotate scapula
d. Innervation: CN XI
2. Levator scapula (back)
a. Origin: transverse processes of cervical vertebrae
b. Insertion: scapula
c. Action: elevate scapula
d. Cervical nerves
3. Rhomboideus major and minor (back)
a. Origin: spinous processes of C7 and upper thoracic vertebrae
b. Insertion: scapula
c. Action: adduction and downward rotation of scapula
d. Innervation: cervical nerves
4. Serratus anterior (chest)
a. Origin: ribs
b. Insertion: scapula
c. Action: protract and upwardly rotate scapula
d. Innervation: cervical nerves
5. Pectoralis minor
a. Origin: ribs
b. Insertion: scapula
c. Action: depress, protract, downward rotation of scapula
d. Innervation: pectoral n.
Muscles that move the arm
- All originate on the scapula and insert on the humerus, except for latissimus and
pectoralis major.
- All are innervated by cervical nerves.
You should look up the ORIGIN, INSERTION AND ACTION for the following muscles.
